This school is popularly known by the name TNagar High School, but presently called C D Nayagam TNagar Higher Secondary School in honour of the founder, socially conscious philanthropist Shri. C. Deivanayagam (C.D.N) affectionately called "Thamizh Kaavalar" (தமிழ் காவலர்) started the school as early as 1931 in a rented building. He later purchased 2.5 acres of land in Venkatanarayana Road, T Nagar and built the school building.
In 1933, the school was opened by the then Prime Minister of Madras Presidency, Honourable Shri Rajagopalachari and Governor Honourable Lord John Francis Ashley Erskine, GCSI, GCIE.
Thiru C.D.N has started the school with the prime motive and objective of helping the most downtrodden children get value education free of cost. The school was upgraded to high school in 1944 and till late 60s it was a co-education school.
This is one among the few schools in Tamilnadu which is not charging single paise extra other than government stipulated fees for english medium students, while for tamil medium students no fees is collected at all.
